Amazon CSM Brand Review: How to Appeal, Pass, and Protect Your Sales

For many resellers, the CSM Brand Review has become a more and more dreaded event. What was originally a straightforward process of showing your papers for a few ASINs has turned into an opaque bureaucratic process, where long-established resellers suddenly find themselves without a business once the team responsible for these has decided to suspend their ability to sell a brand.

Why Are CSM Brand Reviews So Difficult to Navigate?

While proving authenticity should be straightforward, usually it is pretty apparent how good your supply chain is, especially if you are using an officially authorized and verifiable supplier of the brand. We’ve seen too many of these issues go on for weeks, with Amazon sending only template responses to submissions or rerouting to the wrong teams when requesting escalations.

What’s more, teams that would often have insight into such critical account events, such as Selling Partner Support or Account Health, typically have no insight into CSM Brand Reviews and offer only boilerplate advice regarding basic document requirements, rather than providing any real insight into why the team has chosen to reject your appeal. To make matters worse, attempting to escalate rejected appeals and documents can seem so chaotic that you wonder if anyone outside of the team reviewing knows what they are doing in there.

What Happens If You Fail a CSM Brand Review?

This can be a nightmarish scenario for sellers, resulting in not only weeks of lost sales but also ongoing FBA fees, reshipment costs once the brand is reinstated, and months of damage when it comes to ranking and inventory planning. As this is happening more and more often, we wanted to provide some best practices in approaching these reviews.

How Do You Pass a CSM Brand Review on Amazon?

Stay Within Amazon’s Deadline

Appeal within the timeframe they give you. As always, appeals go far better if you are within Amazon’s timeframe. While 7 days is not very long to gather documents for all sales for half a dozen or more ASINs, a CSM Brand Review is mission-critical, and thus should be your top priority.

That means:

Provide Complete and Verifiable Documents

It’s important to include any information showing that your supplier is legitimate and authorized. These days, this basically means documentation or clear online statements directly from the brand, such as your supplier being listed on the brand’s website as an authorized supplier.

This evidence should be provided alongside the usual batch of required documents, such as your invoices, letters of authorization, proof of payment records for your invoices, and shipping records, as well as supply chain invoices or other documentation leading back to the brand or its authorized distributor. We strongly recommend that resellers thoroughly vet potential suppliers before they start selling, and ensure that these documents will be made available by the supplier if and when needed.

What Are Amazon’s Requirements for Invoices and Letters of Authorization?

If you don’t know Amazon’s standards for invoices or letters of authorization, we highly recommend reviewing their policy, as they can be extremely pedantic, and even minor deviations from their requirements can cause an appeal to be rejected.

How Do You Write a Strong Amazon CSM Brand Review Appeal?

Writing an appeal that makes it easy for Amazon to verify your suppliers. Amazon reps have little time to review your appeal, so ensuring that your documents and the information in your appeal are sorted by ASIN and / or supplier is key. Include all contact details for your supplier, including, if possible, someone at the company who can vouch for your relationship with them. Amazon likes to know the company has a good web presence, so including links to the website, social media, and so on can also help.

Should Your Supplier Be Involved in the Verification Process?

Ask your supplier to be ready for Amazon’s call. Amazon may call or email your supplier to verify your invoices. If your supplier knows this, they can help Amazon confirm that your documentation is authentic.

Can Amazon Seller Support Help With CSM Brand Reviews?

Amazon’s public-facing teams are unlikely to help or have insight. Usually, when you’re having an issue with listings or your account, Account Health and Seller Partner Support can give you feedback based on why the team has flagged you or rejected your appeal. Unfortunately, as CSM is related to the gating team, the usual public-facing teams have little insight into this process and can only provide the most general information, such as what an invoice should be, what a letter of authorization is, and so on.

How Do CSM Brand Reviews Relate to Authenticity Violations and Other Amazon Reviews?

Continue to appeal the ASINs through your account health dashboard in Seller Central. We mostly see ASINs that have already been flagged for authenticity violations on the dashboard show up in the CSM Brand Reviews. In this case, showing that Seller Performance has verified your supply chain by providing the notification of listing reinstatement can be a huge help in showing the CSM team that they can trust your sourcing. In the same way, authenticity violations on the dashboard may also trigger SCRAM reviews or FBA Inventory Reviews. It is crucial to understand that these are all separate teams within Amazon, and so must be addressed separately, in accordance with the instructions in each notice, even though the submissions and documents may be largely similar.

What Should You Do If Your CSM Appeal Gets Rejected?

Keep going. CSM is very likely to reject your appeal for minor reasons these days. Before escalating, make sure you have given them all the information they have requested in a way that is easy to verify.

Why Is a Strong Supply Chain Critical for Long Term Amazon Success?

Even though this process can be challenging, having a strong supply chain and clear documentation makes it much easier to keep selling your brand.
